Russell Crowe stars as pugilist Jim Braddock in this riveting biopic created by the Academy Award-winning team of producer Brian Grazer, director Ron Howard and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman. Braddock, who garnered boxing glory when he defeated champion Max Baer in a winner-takes-all bout, arrived on the scene during the Great Depression (a time when Americans were woefully in need of a hero) and rose to the occasion with a vengeance.

The Food of the Gods
A group of friends arrive on a remote Canadian island, only to discover that they're being hunted by freakishly giant rodents. The Wizard of Gore
In plain view of the audience, illusionist Montag the Magnificent (Ray Sager) eviscerates a cortege of female volunteers, who walk away unscathed from their gruesome demises as the awestruck crowd erupts into applause. But all is not as it seems: When the hypnosis later wears off, Montag's hapless victims literally come apart in their tracks. In the Heat of the Night
A Philadelphia detective (Sidney Poitier) helps a redneck Southern sheriff (Rod Steiger, who won a Best Actor Oscar) solve a murder in this fascinating study in racism that still strikes a resonant chord today. Steiger is fabulous as the put-upon sheriff who comes to respect Poitier's professionalism and ability. Norman Jewison directs with feeling for the cultural and social atmosphere of the setting. Filmed in 1967.

The Machine Girl
While seeking revenge for her little brother's murder, Japanese schoolgirl Ami (Minase Yashiro) loses an arm to yakuza villains. Her plight prompts a pair of friendly mechanics to furnish our heroine with a butt-kicking machine-gun prosthesis. As the determined Ami sacrifices more limbs, she receives stronger and deadlier upgrades in this outrageous gore-filled slasher from director Noboru Iguchi.

The Naked City
When a model is found drowned in her bathtub, homicide detectives Dan Muldoon (Barry Fitzgerald) and Jimmy Halloran (Don Taylor) are on the case. Their investigation, the inner workings of the police department and some of the "eight million stories in the Naked City" are explored. Filmed on location in New York City, this classic thriller won Oscars for cinematography and editing and was nominated for a Best Writing Oscar.

Escape from New York

Bloodsucking Freaks
