Plot
Upon hearing that her birth mother has died, an American woman who was raised by adoptive parents travels to her Russian homeland to take over the family farm she inherited.  Strange occurrences begin to happen upon her arrival and she discovers that she's not alone as she meets a mysterious man claiming to be her twin brother along with the manifestations of ghosts.

Jason's Thoughts
Looking back on the first two movies that I watched during this marathon, The Abandoned looks and feels like a top notch thriller/suspense film when compared to Penny Dreadful and The Gravedancers.  The visuals and atmosphere were done wonderfully for an independent horror movie.  The special effects were also nicely done, all of which will make it easier to watch this movie at least one more time.

You see, The Abandoned isn't just a straight forward horror movie, but one that unravels slowly as it goes on.  At times during the film I found myself highly confused as to what was going on but by the end of the film you realize what has just taken place and it suddenly all makes sense.  Knowing how it all plays out, I wouldn't mind revisiting the movie once again to see what I may have missed and put all of the pieces together.

Based on the visuals, atmosphere, special effects, and for what I was able to get out of the story the first time around, The Abandoned was able to earn a 3-star rating in my book.  I do think that the movie could get better with multiple viewings and it could be a 4-star movie, especially after the cloud of confusion is gone.  Once I finish this marathon I may have to give The Abandoned another look, considering that it has been the best movie thus far in the 2006 After Dark Horrorfest.
