Jason's Thoughts
The X-Men trilogy is capped off with X-Men 3: The Last Stand, and while it doesn't quite live up to its predecessor, X2, the third installment is fun watch that had a lot of surprises thrown in for good measure.
Like the previous X-Men movies, X-Men 3: The Last Stand continues what was laid out in the previous films with mutant extinction being the core storyline. This time around, a drug has been created that can nullify the mutant gene, thus turning mutants into regular human beings.
It was surprising to see how frequently this drug was administered during the movie. Magneto, Mystique and Rogue all fell victim of the drug by choice or by force. On top of that, Cyclops and Professor Xavier met their demise. Jean Grey, who was resurrected in this film, also dies at the hands of Wolverine.
Taking their places are a few new characters in the form of Beast and Archangel. However, both of these characters are used as minor players and very little of their characters are developed. Also, many of the secondary evil mutants are skipped over and again I don't recall many of them even having their names mentioned.
Also, the produces couldn't leave well enough alone, as in the final moments it is hinted at that Magneto still has his mutant powers and Professor X is hinted at still being alive after the end credits roll. Both of these small scenes lessened the overall impact the film had when it pertains to those characters.
Both of those aforementioned aspects contributed to me lowering my star rating of X-Men 3: The Last Stand to a four. The mutant names have been a problem in the past with this series and I don't understand why they can't get it right. Taking the easy way out with Magneto and Professor X was cheap and not needed.
Even with those flaws, X-Men 3: The Last Stand delivered on action and special effects as is expected with this series. The huge mutant/military battle that takes place at the laboratory that is based on Alcatraz Island is a visual treat. It was during this battle when Juggernaut was able to give a nod to the "I'm the Juggernaut, bitch!" Internet meme, which got a good laugh from me. It was good to see that they were able to fit that in during the movie.
Overall, X-Men 3: The Last Stand was probably the weakest offering out of the X-Men series of films. With that said, the movie is still leaps and bounds above a good majority of comic book movies that had been released up to this point.
