Jason's Thoughts
This movie was bad. I mean, I've sat through a bunch of horrible horror movies before, in fact I've subjected myself to sit though three After Dark Horrorfest marathons, but Man-Thing is in a class by itself. It actually put me to sleep and made me waste more time as I had to go back and find where I dozed off so I could continue and finish the terrible film.
I will admit, before working in a video store, I didn't know this movie existed, nor had I even heard of the character called Man-Thing. Thus, I don't have a lot to draw from in terms of how this movie uses its source material, and from watching this pile of trash, I have no desire to even look into the comic and origins of Man-Thing. In fact, the movie doesn't even really dive into the origins of Man-Thing. It is just a monstrous being living in a swamp and killing locals at random.
Being based on a comic book, Man-Thing does go beyond what one would typically think would be in this type of film. Aside from the origins never really being told, Man-Thing does show a lot of gore and even some nudity, both of which starts right off the bat in the first few minutes. Some of the gore effects are well done, as is the effects of Man-Thing, but neither of those help this movie as the plot is boring as all hell and plods along at a snails pace.
Not all of the effects are all that great either, as the tentacles (or whatever they were on Man-Thing) were horribly animated. Low budget or not, a movie filmed in the 21st century shouldn't have animation that is on par with that done in the 1981 film Clash of the Titans, unless it is used for comedic effect. This was not one of those times, although it did get a few tired laughs out of me. It is no wonder why the producers of this movie went the Jaws route and showed very little of the titular character.
According to IMDB, a test screening of this film led to half of the audience to leave before the movie was over. No wonder it went straight to video instead of having a theatrical release. I'm not sure why Marvel gave the green light on this film, but it is a good cure for insomnia, but not much else.
