Plot
When she loses her city's vital power supply, Kryptonian Kara (Helen Slater) follows it to Earth in the hopes of retrieving it. Although gifted with powers like her cousin Superman, Kara struggles to defeat the evil Selena (Faye Dunaway), who now controls the mighty object. To fit into her new surroundings, Kara disguises herself as high school student Linda Lee and says that she's Clark Kent's cousin.
Jason's Thoughts
If I didn't know any better, I would have thought Supergirl was a made-for-TV movie. And it would have been brought to you by A&W and Popeye's, two products prominently featured in the movie.
I wasn't expecting much from Supergirl and it lived up to that expectation. It actually bored me to sleep and I woke up just in time for the credits. Unfortunately, I forced myself to go back and watch the final 30 minutes that I missed, even though I didn't miss much.
Supergirl has some loose connections to the Superman movie series, such as the character of Jimmy Olson, plus Supergirl's human alter ego, Linda Lee, rooms with Lucy Lane, Louis Lane's younger sister. Aside from those connections, Supergirl does keep the ball rolling downhill for the Superman movie franchise.
Even with some well known actors, such as Faye Dunaway and Peter O'Toole, the overall acting in this movie is horrendous, which is why it may be easily mistaken for a made-for-TV movie. The special effects aren't all that great either. I will give some credit for the look of the shadow demon, but the effects done with it quickly took that praise away.
Usually I can pick out a few good things in even the worst of movies, however, there really is nothing good about Supergirl. Flat acting, bad special effects, plot that wasn't all that interesting. It did include a nice shot of the old Comiskey Park during a flight scene, so I guess that was a nice touch.
If an overhead shot of a ballpark is one of the best things I can recall from a movie I just watch an hour ago, you know it had to be bad.
