Finally, the third story features a rising rap star who is questioned about the mysterious circumstances of his partner's death.
Jason's Thoughts
I was wondering what I got myself into when I started watching this movie. Hood of Horror begins with a crudely animated sequence, which led me to believe that the entire movie would go that route. Thankfully it doesn't last long as it turns into a series of live action short films, all of which are entertaining albeit a bit brief.
Hood of Horror took me back to the days of watching Creepshow or episodes of Tales from the Crypt. The three short stories weren't at all scary, however, they did feature gruesome fatalities and were laced with dark humor. They also all had an updated ghetto feel to them, which gains even more credibility as it was hosted by Snoop Dogg.
The D-O-double G wasn't the only star power in this film either, as there were a surprising amount of B-list stars featured throughout all of the movies. Hood of Horror featured the likes of Danny Trejo, Ernie Hudson, Billy Dee Williams, Jason Alexander and even Diamond Dallas Page. Not the best talent out there, but that is a lot of known actors for a low budget horror anthology.
The movies themselves are all short and spare no expense in over-top-gore gore and comedy. I felt that they could have all benefited with a little more time, as the three stories and the bridges between clock in at under 90 minutes. This type of format, though, would have benefited a couple of other movies on this list, such as Penny Dreadful or Unrest.
Coming in to the movie, my expectations were set pretty low and Hood of Horror exceeded those expectations. This wasn't a hidden horror gem by any stretch of the imagination, however, it was a decent trilogy of gory movies that were entertaining to say the least.
