Jason's Thoughts
Trailers of the films in the After Dark Horrorfest are shown before the featured movie on all of the DVDs that I have watched so far. Seeing as "Unrest" is the sixth movie in this series that I have watched, I have become familiar with the previews since they show the same ones over and over again. Prior to watching 'Unrest,' I was intrigued by what was shown in the trailer and was looking forward to it.
The previews showed college students working on cadavers in a morgue and was shot in a moody, atmospheric way that it appeared that I was in for a treat with this film. On top of it all, the trailer stated that it was the first movie to ever feature real dead bodies in it. I have a penchant for the macabre, so this also grabbed my interest. Then I started to watch the movie.
While I will give the filmmakers credit for creating a gloomy, fearsome, atmosphere and the acting was decent, but the story was severely lacking. I was into the film for the first half hour or so until an "Aztec curse" element was brought into the movie. Cue the tribal drum music and my interest suddenly flew out the window.
Although it seemed like there was a lot more to "Unrest" from the previews, one needs more than atmosphere and dead bodies to make a decent horror film. For those who haven't seen this movie, I suggest that you only watch the trailer. It features all of the best parts and makes it seem more terrifying and interesting than what transpires on screen.
Plus, it saves you about 82 minutes.
