Autopsy (After Dark Horrorfest III Review)

Plot
On their way home from Mardi Gras, a group of young partygoers crashes their car in the middle of nowhere. Luckily, an ambulance mysteriously shows up to take them to Mercy Hospital -- but they seem to be the only patients. What's more, the staff - including a medic who drinks spinal fluid fresh from the source and a delusional nurse - is giving them the creeps.

Jason's Thoughts
I can't believe it's been almost a year since I watched Autopsy and I have never gotten around to reviewing it. Time flies, I guess. Oops.

Anyway, I tend to stay away from horror films that have the typical story trope of a group of individuals stranded somewhere and hunted down one-by-one. This plot device is overdone and played out, especially with the newest wave of horror films. Autopsy is more of the same in that regard, however, it is one of the few that are actually enjoyable to watch.

I should have known I was going to be in for an entertaining movie when Clutch's "The Mob Goes Wild" was blared during the opening credits. Autopsy scored high in that regard. Once the stereotypical car stall happens near a creepy hospital, I thought it was all going to go downhill from there. Surprisingly, though, it didn't.

While using a standard plot device, I was glad to see that they took the time to make the special effects especially good - one scene in particular with a man's veins and arteries being pinned around a room was really well done. The overall acting wasn't Oscar worthy, it was above par for a low budget horror film. Autopsy also gets a bonus for getting Robert Patrick (T-1000) to play the part of the mad doctor.

The blood, gore, and scares were also turned up a few notches as well. After watching hundreds, if not thousands, of horror films, I'm not one that jumps very often and can see most scare scenes coming a mile away. Autopsy got me to jump a few times, which is a rare feat in itself.

I would not recommend anyone to go out and watch Autopsy by any means, but if it happens to come up at some point, then by all means watch it. It is a stereotypical gory horror film done right.
