Jason's Thoughts
I was pleasantly surprised with From Within. After watching several of the After Dark Horrorfest movies, I have come to find out that most have a decent story but lack in other aspects, or are just horrible altogether. Every so often, though, a movie comes along that works on all levels, and that is where From Within stands.
The story was good, the acting was nearly top notch, and the camera work and effects were great in setting up the atmosphere and mood. Like every good horror film, From Within even made me jump in a few scenes, which was surprising considering the slow, methodical pace of the movie. Don't let the slow pacing of the film fool you either, there is plenty of blood and gore in the movie, all of which is well done.
From Within also featured a nice twist at the end, which I feel made the movie even better. As many of you may know, I hate the typical "M. Night Shyamalan Twist" in movies, the ones that are just there to throw a twist into the plot that may or may not fit into the story. The twist in From Within makes sense, is within reason, and added to the overall film. Plus, I am a sucker for horror films that end on a down note.
I don't think From Within will ever be listed as one of the all-time classic horror films, but it is a nice hidden gem in a genre over saturated with horrible movies.
