Plot
The 1960s TV series comes to the big screen as Gotham City's most feared criminals - The Catwoman, The Joker, The Penguin and The Riddler - team up to take over the city and the world. Gotham has the Dynamic Duo on their side, though, as Batman and Robin attempt to solve the mystery of the United Underworld and put a stop to their plans.
Jason's Thoughts
I wasn't around when the Batman TV series was on the air, but I probably have seen a majority of the episodes as a local television station used to play 24-hour marathons of the show at different times during the year. The show and its characters appealed to me as a kid and I was surprised to find out a few years ago that a movie was made during that same time period. In fact, it was released between the first and second seasons of the TV show.
I finally got to watch this movie for the first time and if you were a fan of the series, chances are you will like this movie. As a kid, I don't think I picked up on all of the humor and the campiness of the series, but I'm sure it is in there as it is quite thick in the movie. Everything from items like Shark Repellent Batspray to more corny "Holy (insert object here)!" lines than you can shake a stick at are all included in the movie. And while this campiness works in small episodic doses, it does seem a bit much for a feature length film.
Don't get me wrong, Batman: The Movie was entertaining to watch and it brought me back to my childhood, but I prefer the more darker and serious side of Batman that has come out on the big screen in the past 20 years instead of this bright and comedic one. This snapshot in time, however, was worth watching at least once, just to see how much the comic book series has evolved on the big screen.
