Jason’s Thoughts
This movie was nothing like I expected it to be. For starters, with a name like The Deaths of Ian Stone, you’d expect to see a ton of violence and bloodshed, but it was nothing like that. Instead, it seemed more like a supernatural thriller than an all out horror movie that I assumed it would be after seeing the title.
The film is about the title character and how he is hunted down by these beasts around the same time everyday. Once he is killed, he wakes up in an alternate world in which the faces are the same, but the situation is different. For example, Ian finds himself as a star hockey player, a white collar working stiff, a taxi cab driver, and a junkie in four different realities.
Yes, it all sounds confusing but it all starts to unravel, little by little, as each day and alternate reality comes before us. By the time the movie nears the end, though, it seems to lose some steam and eventually stalls out as the movie comes to a close.
While the movie ends on a soft note, I have to give credit to the filmmakers for giving it their best effort. After seeing some of the movies in the 2006 Horrorfest, The Deaths of Ian Stone could almost be Oscar worthy when compared to some of the other movies in the previous series. This movie was actually put together very nicely with good acting and good camera work.
What surprised me the most, though, was the great use of special effects in this movie. There wasn’t a whole lot, but what little was done was excellent, especially considering that this was more than likely a low budget film.
Overall, this movie set a standard for the other movies in this series to achieve. Hopefully this wasn’t the best movie the 2007 After Dark Horrorfest has to offer.
